Carnival Cancels Perks for Two Sailings Days After New Rewards Launch
Key Aspects:
Two different Carnival sailings on different ships are losing Platinum benefits just days after the Carnival Rewards program began.
Both cruises are 8-night sailings departing on Saturday, September 5, 2026: Carnival Sunshine and Carnival Vista.
Carnival Rewards was introduced partly to address this problem because perks cannot be offered to so many guests onboard.
The new Carnival Rewards program just began on September 1, 2026, and already the cruise line is cancelling benefits for select sailings because too many passengers qualify for some of the most coveted perks.
The impacted sailings are the Saturday, September 5, 2026 departures of Carnival Sunshine and Carnival Vista. The ships are departing from Norfolk, Virginia and Port Canaveral, Florida respectively, but the messages to guests are the same.
“Due to the high number of Platinum guests joining us on this voyage, we will not be able to provide the following benefits,” the email notifications, which have been shared on Facebook, begin.
The now-cancelled benefits are the priority embarkation and debarkation both at the ships’ homeports as well as ports of call, along with early access to staterooms to drop off luggage.
“To allow the housekeeping team to get the staterooms ready by 1:30 PM, luggage ‘Drop and Go’ cannot be facilitated given the limited turnaround time,” the email explains.
Similarly, priority luggage delivery will not be available for either of these sailings, and the email notes that the priority line and phone assistance at Guest Services “may not” be available.
The 3,002-guest Carnival Sunshine is departing on an 8-night Canada sailing on September 5, 2026, with port visits to Saint John, New Brunswick as well as both Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia before returning to Norfolk on September 13.
Meanwhile, the 3,934-guest Carnival Vista is sailing an 8-night Southern Caribbean itinerary on Saturday, with visits to Aruba, Curacao, and Celebration Key before returning to the Sunshine State.
New Rewards Program, Same Old Problems
Cancelling these types of benefits has become commonplace on Carnival cruises in recent years. This has been particularly true for unique or longer itineraries that may attract more guests higher in the cruise line’s former Very Important Fun Person (VIFP) program.
Carnival Cruise Line does not disclose how many guests have what loyalty levels or status for individual sailings.
Guests impacted by the loss of benefits on these sailings will understandably be disappointed, particularly since Carnival Cruise Line was adamant that retiring the VIFP program and moving to Carnival Rewards was essential because too many guests had achieved high levels of benefits.
“When so many guests have elite status, it is much more difficult to make everyone feel special,” Christine Duffy, Carnival Cruise Line’s president, said when the new rewards program was announced.
“These realities will only continue to erode the recognition and rewards of the current VIFP Club program, and we feel that change is necessary in order to better recognize our guests and give them more choice in how they are rewarded.”
With Platinum benefits now cancelled on two sailings less than a week after the launch of Carnival Rewards, it’s clear that any fix to offering rewards and recognition to guests will not be immediate.

Carnival Cruise Line has been clear that guests from the VIFP program keep their loyalty status, including Platinum, through December 2028 if they opted in to the Carnival Rewards program.
Because the priority boarding and stateroom access benefits are still part of the new program, these types of benefit cancellations on select sailings may continue at least until that time. After December 2028, the number of Platinum guests may begin to drop if guests do not re-qualify for that status under the spend-based program.
